On the 15th of September, Philip Morris Lithuania celebrated the 20th anniversary of Philip Morris International greenfield investment in Klaipėda, and completion of the first phase of the factory modernization project.
Philip Morris International invested 19 million EUR to the Klaipėda factory modernization project, which was started last year. This year, the first phase was completed, during which Philip Morris Lithuania expanded the premises of cigarettes production unit. After implementation of the whole project, the area of the factory premises will be increased by 8 thousand m2, and the total area of the complex will reach 30.3 thousand m2.
“20 years ago we moved from the old town of Klaipėda to a new factory, built on a green field in the industrial zone. The old tobacco factory buildings were given to Klaipėda city municipality as a gift. Today, after almost a quarter of a century, we are implementing factory modernization project, thus, taking a big and important step in the history of the company, by fully improving the conditions for employees and setting the way for our future business.” – in an opening speech on the 15th of September said Johan Bink, Director Operations of Philip Morris Lithuania.
The Minister of Economy Mindaugas Sinkevičius participated in the event and expressed pride of the investments and achievements of the company, while Mayor of Klaipėda, Vytautas Grubliauskas, described the factory as a business card of Klaipėda city and the whole region. Klaipėda Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts awarded the honorary guest of the event, the former Director Operations, Jacques Hebbelinck, under whose leadership the old tobacco factory buildings were given to Klaipėda city as a gift. The former mayor of Klaipėda city, Rimantas Taraškevičius, shared memories by quoting the gifting documents and reminding the importance of the Factory of Arts, which is currently established in the old tobacco factory.
