Klaipėda Port is returning back to the leader position among the Baltic Ports
During the period of January - June of 2010 Eastern Baltic Coast Seaports handled 133,9 million tons of marine cargo, i.e more by 6,1 percent if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year. 54,8 percent of total cargo flows are attributed to Russian Ports, 21,5 percent - to Latvian Ports, 13,2 percent to Estonian Ports and 11,2 to KlaipėdaPort.
Klaipėda Port has gradually started returning back to its position of a leader among the Baltic Ports. The first half of the year was rather promising: cargo and passenger flows have been rapidly increasing, accordingly the end of the year forecasts record handling rates. Cargo handling in January - July of 2010 increased by 14,5 percent, totally nearly 15,012 million tons of marine cargo were handled.
Klaipėda continues to surpass the neighbouring Ports of Ryga and Ventspils - during the period from January to JuneKlaipėdaPort cargo handling exceeded the cargo handling overturn of the mentioned ports in terms of cargo turnover. Cargo handling turnover in KlaipėdaPort was lower than in a joint TallinPort, Saint Petersburg and PrimorskPorts.
The increase of cargo volumes transported by vehicle transport modes and containers is extremely pleasant: during January - June of 2010 104 846 vehicle units transhipped by Ro - Ro lines, i.e. more by 28,9 percent than during the corresponding period of the previous year, were handled in Klaipeda Port. 141 077 TEU containers, i.e. more by 14 percent comparing with the same period of 2009, were handled during the analysed period. Klaipėda Port keeps its position of the leader and remains the largest container port among other Baltic Ports.
The season of cruise ships that started in Klaipėda Port several month ago was extremely successful. In January - June of this year Klaipėda Port was visited by 18,7 thousand passengers, i.e, more by 8,6 percent if to compare with the same period of 2009.
