Reconstructing “Draugyste” Train Station
European Social Fund has provided 31.6 million litas for reconstruction of rail roads of "Draugyste" railway station in Klaipeda.
By the year 2012, car collection routes will have been extended two times to one kilometer. This is done to receive longer car formations, simultaneously carrying 6,000 tons of cargo. Today, the railway formations bring up to 4,000 tons of cargo at once.
The fund money will also be used for updating the rail and automatic control systems, as well as contact, signaling and power supply equipment. The total value of reconstructions, including the Lithuanian Railways' funds, will amount to 40 million litas.
This is only part of the works that are undertaken in the reconstruction of Klaipeda port's railway junction. The total value of reconstructions, including the trunk railways leading up to the port, will reach more than 1.5 billion litas.
Currently, Lithuanian Railways is able to carry up to 40 million tons of cargo to the port of Klaipeda per year. After modernization, the total freight capacity will grow from 10 to 15 million tons of cargo per year.
